Mile Xella Menla Xelîl Şêx Xelîl
According to the book Çiyayê Kurmênc (Efrîn): A Geographical Study by Dr. Mihemed Ebdo Elî:
The village has 561 inhabitants, covers 920 hectares, is located 14 km from the center, and sits at an altitude of 125 meters.
Etymology and Location
The village took its name from the name of its first inhabitant: Xelîl, and his religious title in Kurdish: Mile. It is a small village located on the southern bank of the Efrîn river. It is situated a few hundred meters from the Turkish border. It contains the uninhabited palace of the Aghas of the Kenc family.
Geography and Boundaries
According to the book Efrîn... Her River and Her Green Hills by Ebdulrehman Mihemed from the village of Qetme:
Menla Xelîl is a village in the Efrîn valley, administratively belonging to the Cindirês sub-district of the Efrîn district, in the Heleb governorate. It is a small village situated on flat terrain on the southern slope of the aforementioned valley. Its lands, which contain fertile alluvial soil, slope gently towards the northwest in the direction of the river's course. It is located 7 km southwest of the town of Cindirês.
It is bordered to the north by the course of the Efrîn river, a plain planted with olive trees, the village of Nisriye 1 km away, and the village of Hec Îskender. To the south, it is bordered directly by the border strip with Turkey, only meters away. To the east, there is a wide, fertile agricultural plain planted with olive trees, cotton, and pomegranate, and the village of Dêr Belût. To the west, at a distance of 5 meters, lies the Deşta Amûqê (Amik Plain), the Liwa Îskenderûn (Sancak of Alexandretta), and the direct borders of Turkey.
History and Structure
The number of houses is currently about 15, and the village is approximately 350 years old. It was historically a large village before the separation of the Liwa Îskenderûn from Syria in 1938. The border strip divided the village into two parts: the western part went to Turkey, of which nothing remains except lands suitable for agriculture; the Syrian part is the current village as mentioned. Its old houses are made of stone and mud with flat wooden roofs, while the modern ones are concrete and follow the road adjacent to the village from the northern side.
Infrastructure and Agriculture
The village has an electricity network, a border police station, and a telephone center. The village gets its drinking water from a water network connected to an artesian well in the neighboring village of Nisriye. The road from the village to the town of Cindirês is paved. The two farms of Dêr Belût and Seferiye are administratively attached to it.
Residents work in the cultivation of grains and olives via rainfed farming (800 hectares), and cotton, summer vegetables, pomegranates, and sugar beets via irrigated farming by pumping from the Efrîn river (120 hectares), alongside raising sheep and cattle. It is a village in the far southwest of the Efrîn region.
Social Structure
Its most important families were the family of Elî Kenc, the former Agha; currently, no one from this family remains in the village, as they are either in Turkey or have passed away.
