How to Use Subtitles with YouTube

A simple guide for the Substital browser extension

What is Substital?

Substital is a free browser extension that lets you add subtitles to any YouTube video. You can:

  • Upload any subtitles file (.SRT format) to any YouTube video
  • Adjust timing if subtitles are out of sync
  • Change subtitle size and color

Instructions for Chrome

Go to the Chrome Web Store:

chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/substital

Click the blue "Add to Chrome" button

Click "Add extension" when the pop-up appears

Pin the extension (recommended): Click the puzzle piece icon in the top-right corner, then click the pin icon next to Substital

Instructions for Firefox

Click the blue "Add to Firefox" button

Click "Add" when the permission pop-up appears

Pin the extension (recommended): Right-click the Substital icon and select "Pin to Toolbar"

Instructions for Edge

Go to the Edge Add-ons Store:

Click the blue "Get" button

How to Use Substital

Once installed, follow these steps for any YouTube video

Go to a YouTube video you want to watch

Click the Substital icon in your browser toolbar (top-right corner)

Click the video link that appears in the pop-up

Drag and drop your .SRT subtitle file into the pop-up window (or click the upload button to browse for it)

If Subtitles Are Out of Sync

Sometimes subtitles appear too early or too late. Here's how to fix it:

Look for the Substital button that appears at the bottom of the YouTube video player (after adding subtitles)

Click it to open the settings

Use the sync slider to adjust timing:

  • Slide left (negative) if subtitles appear too early
  • Slide right (positive) if subtitles appear too late

Customizing Subtitles

You can change how subtitles look from the same Substital button at the bottom of the video player:

  • Font size (make text bigger or smaller)
  • Text color
  • Background color
