Dedicated Figure & Historical Roots
One account identifies Etûn as Ebdullah Şêx Îsmaîl. In that version, Etûn rose against the Ottoman governor of Aleppo, was hanged on a Wednesday in front of a coffeehouse in Erzînê, and Etûn's burial place later became the shrine known as Etûnê.1
A descendant gives a longer version. Etûn became an outlaw at Wêranşar, went to Îbrahîm Paşa of the Millî tribe, and fought the Ottomans there. He describes Etûn as merciful to poor people, saying that Etûn took from the rich and gave to the poor. He also says that, when intercepting caravans, Etûn would not permit women to be harmed. He places these events before the First World War. In his account, the Ottomans announced a general amnesty. Etûn surrendered, was captured, and was hanged in Erzînê. After that, the village was dispersed.2
The accounts do not fully agree. One names Omerê Etûnê and connects him with twenty-one participants in the Sheikh Said revolt. One gives the execution year as 1980, while another places Etûn under Ottoman rule, before the First World War. It is not clear whether the names refer to the same person or which date is correct.3
